Bhutan, the mystical Himalayan Kingdom known for its natural beauty, spiritual richness, and “Gross National Happiness,” is a destination like no other. Our seven-night journey took us to the serene valleys of Paro, the stunning landscapes of Phobjikha, and the cultural heart of Punakha, with stays in some of Bhutan’s most luxurious accommodations – COMO Uma Paro, Gangtey Lodge Phobjikha, and COMO Uma Punakha.
Day 1: Arrival in Paro – First Impressions and Tranquil Luxury
After a brief overnight stop at the Novotel Airport Hotel in Bangkok, we flew on Drukair to Paro. The descent into Bhutan is breathtaking – snow-capped Himalayan peaks, winding valley trails, and lush greenery set the tone for this magical journey.
On arrival, we checked in at COMO Uma Paro, nestled amidst a peaceful pine forest. Offering luxurious stand-alone villas with spacious lounges, private treatment rooms, and the option for in-room massages, the resort immediately exuded calm and exclusivity.

Day 2: Paro to Phobjikha Valley – Through Scenic Mountain Passes
A winding drive took us to Phobjikha Valley, passing through the stunning Dochu La Pass (3,000m), where 108 chortens stand in memory of Bhutan’s rich Buddhist heritage. The scenery here is truly awe-inspiring, with fluttering prayer flags and sweeping views of the Himalayas.
Highlights included:
Arriving at Gangtey Lodge Phobjikha, we were welcomed into a small luxury lodge with only 12 rooms, offering unparalleled views of the valley. Farm-to-table meals, personalised massages, and cosy evenings by the fire made this stay unforgettable.
Overnight: Gangtey Lodge Phobjikha
Day 3: Nature Trails and Spiritual Exploration in Phobjikha
We spent the day exploring the pristine Phobjikha Valley, home to the rare Black-Necked Cranes that migrate here during winter.
Key experiences:
This day offered an incredible balance of natural beauty and spiritual discovery.
Overnight: Gangtey Lodge Phobjikha
Day 4: Phobjikha to Punakha – Through Lush Valleys and Sacred Temples
The drive to Punakha Valley brought us through semi-tropical terrain, rice paddies, and charming villages. A highlight of the day was a visit to Chimmi Lhakhang, also known as the Fertility Temple. This picturesque site, surrounded by rice fields, is steeped in legend and symbolism.
In Punakha, we checked into COMO Uma Punakha, a serene property perched on a hillside overlooking the river. Smaller than its Paro counterpart, the resort feels like a private villa, with its welcoming terracotta architecture and exceptional dining.
Overnight: COMO Uma Punakha
Day 5: Scenic Walks and Punakha Dzong Exploration
We began the day with a scenic hike to the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a beautiful shrine offering panoramic views of the valley. The trek took us through homesteads, rice fields, and forests, and we were rewarded with incredible vistas at the top.
Other highlights:
The serene beauty of Punakha Valley, with its lower altitude and fertile land, made for a refreshing change.

Day 6: Punakha to Paro – A Stop in Thimphu
We made our way back to Paro Valley, stopping in Bhutan’s capital city, Thimphu. Here, we admired the massive Buddha Dordenma Statue and the National Memorial Chorten.
A highlight was hiking up from the Dochu La Pass (3,000m) to a mountaintop temple. The crisp mountain air and panoramic Himalayan views made this trek a personal favourite, despite the challenge of altitude.
Back at COMO Uma Paro, the peaceful ambiance of the resort provided the perfect space to unwind.

Day 7: The Iconic Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Hike
The final day brought us to Bhutan’s most iconic site – the Taktsang Monastery, or Tiger’s Nest. Perched dramatically on a cliffside, this sacred site is both visually stunning and spiritually moving.
The 3-hour hike took us through pine forests, passing waterfalls and temples along the way. Reaching the viewpoint and seeing the monastery at eye level was one of the most magical moments of the journey.
We celebrated our final night back at COMO Uma Paro, indulging in a relaxing Shambhala treatment and a farewell Bhutanese feast.

Day 8: Departure – Farewell to the Kingdom of Happiness
