In the north, green mountains and vineyard-covered valleys give way to the rugged cliffs and waterfalls of the central region. Further south, the Alentejo’s open plains create a near-desert feel before meeting the golden beaches and resort towns of the Algarve. When to go / useful information

When to go

Portugal is a year-round destination, with spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) often considered the best times to visit thanks to pleasant weather and lighter crowds. July and August bring hot summer temperatures, particularly inland, while the Algarve coast is popular for beach holidays during this time. Winters are generally mild, making Portugal an appealing option even in the cooler months.

Useful information

Currency: Euro (EUR)

Language: Portuguese is the official language. English is widely spoken in tourist areas, especially in Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve.

What makes it special: Portugal is full of diversity in both its diverse landscapes and history. From Lisbon’s historic neighbourhoods to the vineyard terraces of the Douro Valley and the beaches of the Algarve, travellers enjoy both variety and authenticity. Fresh seafood, traditional pastries, and excellent wines highlight its renowned cuisine.

Social customs: Titles such as Senhor or Senhora are used until invited to address someone by their first name. Speaking Spanish to Portuguese people is discouraged, and it is considered impolite to call during mealtimes. Small gestures of courtesy, such as greeting with a handshake and avoiding public stretching, are valued.
