This October, I had the incredible privilege of experiencing a COMO Hotels and Resorts educational, travelling from the bustling cityscape of Singapore to the serene mountains of Italy’s Dolomites and the renowned vineyards of Burgundy, France. Privately owned by Christina Ong and her daughter Melissa, COMO Hotels are infused with personal touches and elegant design, each property exuding a unique charm and commitment to wellness and impeccable service.
The first stop on the way to Europe was a night at the year old COMO Metropolitan Singapore, a recent addition to the heart of Orchard Road. The entry through lifts near Cedric Grolet’s popular tea room felt like stepping into a sanctuary amidst the city buzz. Cedric Grolet, a Michelin-starred pastry chef, has redefined dessert with his pastries that look like real fruit. I was delighted to find one of his creations—a beautifully boxed apple dessert—waiting in my fridge.
Breakfast included his famous croissants, the best I’ve ever had, alongside COMO Shambhala’s wellness offerings like avocado and cucumber toast, perfectly balancing indulgence with health.
As you enter the lobby, the first thing you notice is COMO’s signature fragrance which immediately creates a soothing atmosphere. The second is the friendly staff welcoming you. Besides reception is a peaceful contemporary lounge with a floor to ceiling digital screen with ever changing flowers and a robotic barista called Bruno making complimentry coffees. This is a very cool space.
My room was an Emerald Room which was spacious and thoughtfully designed, complete with a kitchenette. COMO Metropolitan also offers suites with full kitchens and extra space, ideal for longer stays. The highlight of the wellness amenities is the COMO Shambhala center on Level 4, which spans an entire floor and includes yoga studios, spa rooms, a comprehensive gym, and complimentary red light therapy.
The Rooftop pool is a spectacular infinity pool, even more wondrous when you are swimming in it and look down through the floor to the road and out through the sides to see the cityscape! We had a lovely glass of bubbles at sunset on the pool deck looking over the city.
Next, we headed to Europe with an overnight flight to Munich, where a COMO transfer whisked us through Austria to Italy’s stunning Alpe di Siusi, a UNESCO-protected plateau in the South Tyrol region, surrounded by the Dolomites. This is a place where German is the primary language, with street signs being in both German and Italian! With the cows and their bells, buildings looking like a film set located in the Swiss Alps and local fare of dumplings offered, it was hard to believe we were in Italy!
COMO Alpina Dolomites perfectly blends contemporary alpine comfort with dramatic mountain views, housed in a main building and a circular chalet with family suites, the Alpina Chalet Bar and Grill and the Ski hire area for hotel guests. The décor is both cozy and sophisticated, with each room offering terraces that frame the breathtaking landscape. I immediately felt relaxed and at home here as it is a casual atmosphere. All staff from the General Manager down are friendly and helpful. Most are born and bred in the region and rightly so very proud of it.
COMO Shambhala at Alpina is a sanctuary of relaxation, featuring saunas, steam rooms, and a spacious indoor pool that extends outdoors through a sliding door. Whether it’s summer biking or winter skiing, the activities desk provides guests with complimentary, experienced guides and group excursions.
The food was fantastic and between three restaurants a huge variety of cuisine on offer as well as wines. We had an enjoyable wine tasting session of local wines to the region with their very knowledgeable sommelier. The highlight of our time was getting out onto the paths all over the plateau and valley on the hotel e-bikes and our own two feet. Every turn was a wow view! Deborah, the Sales director for Alpina was our guide on a half day walk to a local hut (Chalet restaurant) for a lovely lunch. The Chalet was humming with locals all out enjoying the stunning scenery and mountain air.
Our journey continued with a four-hour transfer to Tuscany, where we arrived at COMO Castello Del Nero, a 12th-century estate nestled in vineyards, olive groves, and woodlands.
This historic property, located in the charming town of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa between Florence and Siena, is a marvel with its terraced gardens, stately rooms, and unique Tuscan charm. I was thrilled to discover a mural in town depicting a Māori woman and soldiers—a tribute to a Māori battalion that liberated Tavarnelle in 1944. Guests at Castello can borrow e-bikes or traditional bicycles to explore the area, which I found an ideal way to see both the estate and the town.
Each room in this historic building has its own distinct character, with details such as large marble baths and beautiful terrace views. My room looked out over the estate, offering a peaceful retreat. A unique feature of Castello is its connection to the surrounding region, including complimentary transfers to Florence and Siena, yoga classes, tennis courts, and a Shambhala wellness center with a thermal pool. Sunday evenings are celebrated with a family-style barbecue and live music, which was a fantastic way to feel connected with both the staff and fellow guests.
One of my most memorable experiences at Castello was truffle hunting. With a seasoned guide and his two dogs, we ventured into the estate’s woodlands in search of prized white and black truffles. Our harvest was incorporated into dinner that evening, making for an unforgettable dining experience.
Our final stop brought us to the beautiful Burgundy wine region in France, at COMO Le Montrachet. Located in the town square and composed of three elegant buildings, this hotel blends the best of French charm with COMO’s signature style.
Like the other COMO hotels, the COMO fragrance and subtle, beautiful, peaceful interior is what greets you the moment you step through the main entrance. It’s a beautiful space that carries on up a few steps into the bar and hotels only restaurant. There is a feature wall at the end of the restaurant made of wicker – it is stunning and set off with 5 huge hanging orbs! Le Montrachet caters to wine enthusiasts, especially those with a taste for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and its interiors feature soft muted tones and exquisite Toile de Jouy fabrics.
My room was beautifully decorated and filled with light, with views that overlooked the quaint town square.
We enjoyed a casual lunch upon arrival before a trip to Beaune (pronounced Bone), where we toured the historic 15th-century Hotel Dieu des Hospices de Beaune, a former hospital with stunning Flemish roof tiles. Our guide, Kim, an American wine exporter, shared fascinating insights into the history and culture of Beaune as we strolled through its charming streets. Dinner at the hotel’s restaurant was a gourmet experience, and with each dish, it was clear that the culinary team was aiming for Michelin recognition.
Our final day was spent cycling through the vineyards on e-bikes to nearby Meursault, where we tasted wines in a cellar owned by friends of our guide. It was a perfect way to connect with the region’s wine culture. Later, a wine-tasting tour took us to two different cellars, where I discovered a deeper appreciation for Burgundy’s winemaking traditions.
Ending my educational with two days in Paris gave me time to reflect on the unforgettable experience with COMO Hotels. Each property uniquely embodied the elegance and comfort COMO is known for, offering wellness, culture, and culinary excellence at every turn. This journey was incredible, and I look forward to sharing these extraordinary destinations with our clients.
"I had just had an outdoor spa in the ship’s amazing Blue Lagoon and was enjoying a talk on Arctic Ice when the captain announced we had spotted a polar bear… no hang on, there’s a few more than one." Polar Bear Footsteps by Sarah Porter, Wild Earth Travel
Sarah Porter, Partnerships Manager at Wild Earth Travel, a cruise specialist company we collaborate with, had the extraordinary opportunity to explore the Arctic earlier this year aboard Ponant’s luxury icebreaker, Le Commandant Charcot. We wanted to share her incredible story with you in the hopes that it inspires you to take on your own adventure. Stories like Sarah’s remind us of how lucky we are to be able to explore such breathtaking, pristine landscapes.
Ponant’s Le Commandant Charcot, launched in 2021, has redefined Arctic exploration. It’s one of only a handful of ships capable of navigating through dense sea ice, making it an ideal choice for those drawn to the raw, untouched beauty of the polar regions. On her two-week voyage, Sarah describes feeling the spirit of true exploration - encounters with towering icebergs, stretches of untouched snow, and a sky that seemed to merge with the endless white horizon.
Perhaps the most extraordinary moment of Sarah’s journey was witnessing 68 polar bears congregating on a whale carcass, a once-in-a-lifetime experience that left both guests and crew in awe. Sarah recounts her first steps onto the ice, hearing the soft crunch of polar bear paws nearby and the sheer thrill of witnessing these majestic animals up close. For her, the journey was filled with so many “wow” moments, from kayaking through ice flows to watching the midnight sun illuminate the Arctic wilderness.
Led by Le Commandant Charcot’s experienced captain, Patrick Marchesseau, the ship’s path was shaped by ice and weather alone. This unique freedom to explore is part of what sets Ponant apart, creating truly spontaneous, immersive experiences in the Arctic.
Not only does Ponant offer exceptional Arctic encounters, but Le Commandant Charcot also exudes luxury with French-inspired décor, an on-deck Blue Lagoon spa, and gourmet dining overseen by Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse. The ship’s state-of-the-art design includes eco-friendly features, from dual diesel and LNG engines to a commitment to Arctic research, underscoring Ponant’s dedication to sustainable exploration.
For those interested in embracing the extreme beauty of the Arctic, a voyage with Ponant offers an unparalleled blend of adventure, comfort, and the thrill of the unknown. To read Sarah's full article in the New Zealand Herald, click here.

Here, she experienced an onsen-style bath and enjoyed a peaceful stay amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. She highly recommends a stay on this floor, especially for those seeking a calm retreat. Day 1-2: Hong Kong Arrival and Exploration
My journey began on a high note with an unexpected upgrade to business class on our flight from Auckland to Hong Kong—thank you Cathay Pacific! The spacious and comfortable cabin with excellent service made the experience feel truly special.
We arrived in Hong Kong later that night and checked into the stylish East Hotel, located in the bustling Quarry Bay district. The hotel is a perfect retreat, with outdoor pool, offering a peaceful atmosphere with easy access to shopping, dining, and local attractions. Though it’s set in the business district, it’s conveniently connected by train to Causeway Bay, Wanchai, Central Hong Kong, and the Star Ferry to Kowloon.
The next day, we enjoyed a scenic ride on the Peak Tram, offering spectacular views of Hong Kong’s natural beauty. At the top there are restaurants and a small mall, for those who want to spend some time. After a day of exploration, we were treated to sunset drinks at EAST Hotel’s trendy Sugar Rooftop Bar, where the sunset and panoramic views were breathtaking. Dinner followed in-house at 'Feast,' where the menu delivered a delightful mix of local and international flavours, a farm to table concept.
A quick tip for future travellers to Hong Kong - if you intend to take a taxi into the city (@ 45 mins) make sure to have some cash on hand on arrival, as taxis at Hong Kong Airport only accept cash! After a long flight we’d recommend having a pre-arranged private car transfer waiting for you. For the more adventurous or well-travelled, there is a train into the city, and Uber’s also pick up from a designated airport area (near The Regal Airport Hotel) and can be easily booked on the Uber app.
Day 3: From Hong Kong to Kyoto
We began the morning with breakfast at The Upper House Hotel's Salisterra Restaurant – a beautiful hotel in such a great location. The rooms at Upper House had stunning views of either the harbour or the mountains, were tranquil and had large bathrooms.
We then transferred to Hong Kong Airport where we were treated again to Cathay Pacific’s Business Class, which made the wait for our flight to Japan that much more enjoyable! Cathay Pacific have 3 business class lounges at HKG airport. ‘The Pier’ near gate 65 is the best, so if you have time, be sure to make your way there to relax and enjoy the numerous food and beverage selections, sleep stations and quiet areas. Upon landing in Osaka, we were met by our private guide and luxurious coach, and headed (1hr15min) straight to Kyoto, where we were checked in to The Thousand Hotel, a 2-minute walk from JR Kyoto Station Central. The hotel was a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city with minimalist design reminiscent of a Japanese teahouse. That, combined with friendly service and little robots delivering meals and other amenities, made this hotel stand out.
Day 4: Exploring Kyoto’s Timeless Beauty
Kyoto is a captivating blend of ancient tradition and modern elegance. Our day was filled with visits to some of its iconic UNESCO World Heritage sites, Buddhist temples and Shinto Shrines. Nijo Castle’s historic Momoyama architecture and well-manicured gardens, along with the majestic Golden Pavilion (Kinkakuji), were remarkable. It was great to learn about the historic Shogun visits, his entourages, audiences, and the infamous “chirping” nightingale (security) floors.
For lunch we enjoyed a Ramen Noodle Cooking Experience at a Ramen Factory and got to eat our creations at the end. A light-hearted experience I’d recommend for anyone.
After lunch we got to visit Gion, Kyoto’s most famous geisha district, filled with traditional wooden merchant houses, shops, restaurants and ochaya (teahouses), where Geiko (geisha) and Maiko (geisha apprentices) live and entertain.
The day ended with dinner at the Hotel Okura Kyoto Okazaki Bettei. This was my personal favourite of the hotels we stayed at. Its serene, spacious atmosphere, beautiful surroundings, and wonderful staff left a lasting impression on me.
Day 5: Immersed in Kyoto’s Cultural Riches
The second day in Kyoto was packed with more stunning experiences. The peaceful Jingo-ji Buddhist Temple in the mountains was a perfect escape from the city, be mindful of the 200 stairs to the gates, and a riverside lunch at Momiji-ya Kawadoko restaurant was simply enchanting in the woods. This is a must do destination for anyone looking for the Autumn colours of Japan. That afternoon we learned all about Japan’s film history with a fun Japanese Hollywood Experience at the museum. A walk through Arashiyama town, followed by a stroll through its tranquil Bamboo Grove, is an absolute must.
The day concluded with a hotel inspection and superb degustation dinner at Hotel The Mitsui, an architectural marvel adjacent to Nijo Castle. The ambiance of the hotel captured the elegance and spirit of Kyoto.
Day 6: Journey to Komatsu (Ishikawa Prefecture)
The following morning we boarded the Thunderbird 11 train, journeying through Japan’s countryside to Tsuranga Station, to join the bullet train Tsurugi 12 to Komatsu. Upon arrival the half-day tour included lunch at Lago Bianco lakeside cafe (Kibagata Park lake is where some of the Kiwi rowing team trained for the Tokyo Olympics!). After lunch we visited Kinzangama Kiln, Takanado, where we learned about the intricate art of overglaze painting of Kutani ware pottery. This was followed by an enjoyable sake tasting at Noguchi Naohiko Sake Institute and a visit to Natadera Temple, with beautiful and serene grounds.
We spent the night at the historic Awazu Onsen Notoya Ryokan, which was a real cultural immersion, not for the faint hearted. Tip: Make sure to source a 4–5-star Ryokan.
Day 7: Discovering Kanazawa
From Komatsu we toured experiencing a Samurai Experience at Shijimaya-honpo which was both educational and fun, having the chance to dress in traditional Samurai uniform, listen to stories, and hold the family swords of Samurai decendants, then continued on to Kanazawa for lunch.
Kanazawa, with its leafy, relaxed atmosphere, completely captivated me. Its rich cultural history made it one of my favourite stops. A quick visit to the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art offered a refreshing contrast with its modern exhibits, before lunch at the museum’s Fusion 21 cafe.
The final stop was a visit to beautiful Kenrokuen Gardens, one of Japan’s top three landscaped gardens, was truly special. I highly recommend setting aside time to explore these stunning gardens—the serene beauty and fascinating historic icons makes the gardens ideal for photographers.
The journey to Tokyo on the Shinkansen Bullet Train KAGYAKI 510 was made even more luxurious with Gran (Business) Class seating, a perfect combination of high-speed and comfort. Attendants give a full meal/drink service on the longer sectors like Kanazawa/ Tokyo.
Our stay at The Capitol Hotel Tokyu, with its timeless Japanese design, delicious restaurants, and great location, was a lovely way to wrap up this day. From the windows you can enjoy a panoramic view of Tokyo cityscape. The spacious rooms have a 5-star Japanese-modern minimalistic style, with shoji and fusuma screens, creating a relaxing atmosphere. Highly recommend Japanese dinner at Shunjun restaurant.
Day 8: Tokyo – Where Tradition Meets Modernity
Tokyo, a city that needs no introduction, offered an exciting mix of old and new. The city offers a seemingly unlimited choice of shopping, entertainment, culture and dining choices for all budgets. The modern and historic areas live next to each other in harmony. We got to drive-by famous Shibuya Crossing, then experience the mesmerizing digital art and light experiences at TeamLab Borderless, at Azabudai Hill– be sure to download the app for easy navigation of TeamLab to ensure you don’t miss anything! There are two TeamLab’s in Tokyo, both are worth a visit.
Every moment in Tokyo was a sensory overload in the best way possible. A highlight was the lunch and panoramic view from the Tokyo Skytree. At 634 meters the tower is the tallest in Japan, and 3rd tallest in the world. A robot was our guide to the lift! Musashi634 Sky Restaurant has stylish cuisine blending French technique and Japanese taste, otherwise there are limited snack counters up the tower.
Our day concluded with a visit to Shitamachi (old town) and Sensoji Temple (also known as Kannon Temple) one of Tokyo’s most colourful temples, then lastly an opportunity to visit Kappabashi Kitchen Street.
The Peninsula Tokyo, superbly located opposite the Imperial Palace and Hibiya Park is within walking distance of the shopping capital Ginza. The hotel is a perfect blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern luxury, offering commanding views of the Japanese capital’s skyline. We enjoyed a fantastic, hosted degustation dinner.
Day 9: Leisure and Luxury Hotel Tours in Tokyo
After a leisurely morning exploring Tokyo, we had the opportunity to check out two exceptional hotels—Mesm Tokyo and The Tokyo Station Hotel—each offering distinct luxury experiences for discerning travellers, with different styles. The Tokyo Station Hotel exuded timeless elegance and historical charm, perfect for those who appreciate a more traditional atmosphere, and location for ease of train station access. It’s quite an expansive property, so be sure to request rooms near the breakfast restaurant, to eliminate a long walk for clients who are put at the other end of the property.
In contrast, Mesm Tokyo impressed me with its modern design, sweeping views of Hamarikyu Garden, and the quirky feature of having a piano in every room! This property can arrange a private water taxi (40mins) to Haneda Airport, a nice alternative to road or rail transport. Narita Airport is about an hour away, accessible by train or private car. We spent the last night at Mesm Tokyo, which was both fun and stylish, finishing the trip with a nightcap at Club Mesm on the 25th Floor, what a view! Its prime location near the Ginza area made it easy to explore Tokyo on foot, and easy subway access.
Day 10: Heading Home
A flight schedule change (expertly handled by Heather CX) had us departing Haneda Airport, instead of Narita, in Business Class to Hong Kong, with another layover at The Pier lounge, then on to Auckland with a chance to experience CX Premium Economy Class product.
As the trip came to an end, I reflected on the incredible experiences I had in both Hong Kong and Japan. From the ancient temples of Kyoto, leafy Kanazawa, to the cutting-edge modernity of Tokyo, Japan truly offers something for every type of traveller. I’m excited to return to Quay Travel with new inspiration for our clients. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Heather at Cathay Pacific, Zoe and Davina at World Journeys, a great team of lovely travel companions, and all our wonderful hosts for making this journey so unforgettable!

My recent trip to Boston and New England was a blend of quintessential America, scenic road trips and a little bit of adventure. It started with a comfortable journey on Air New Zealand, flying from Auckland to Houston. We booked a SkyCouch, which was perfect for two. It allowed us to stretch out, lounge and truly relax on our long-haul flight. Once in the United States, we connected to a domestic flight with United Airlines. I highly recommend their Economy Plus seating area - the extra 20cm of legroom makes all the difference. For those of average height or taller, it’s well worth the upgrade, as it prevents your knees from grazing the seat in front of you!
We arrived in the US on 5 July, just after Independence Day. The patriotic spirit was alive and well with red, white and blue bunting adorned houses, shops, and street corners.
Our adventure began with a 7-day road trip, heading up the coast from Boston through Maine. The journey was dotted with place names like Gloucester, Portsmouth, Dover, and Manchester-On-Sea—a reminder of the deep-rooted heritage that connects this part of the USA with England. Boats were a constant presence on the water and lobster graced every menu. It truly felt like a quintessential New England experience.
One of the highlights was our time in Acadia National Park, where we took on the Beehive Trail. The hike was intrepid with iron ladder rungs and handholds hammered into the rock. It was an exhilarating experience and a very adventurous trail!! The stunning scenery made it all worthwhile, and we were glad to have set off early to avoid both the heat of the day and the wave of hikers that arrived as we were leaving. We then hit the beach but no swimming as the Atlantic Ocean was pretty cool even in the height of summer!
After our coastal exploration, we turned inland and headed towards Stowe in Vermont. This picturesque state is known for its old covered wooden bridges, which we set out to find. These bridges, with their weathered wooden planks and arched roofs, are a nostalgic nod to a bygone era. They evoke a sense of history and charm that’s hard to resist and hunting them down made for a memorable part of our trip. My husband even found an appreciation for them which he didn’t expect.
Once back in Massachusetts, we made a day trip to Newport, Rhode Island, where we walked along the famous Cliff Walk. This scenic path offers views of the ocean on one side and grand, historic mansions on the other. Some of these houses are as opulent as they come, like The Breakers, a gilded-age mansion built by the Vanderbilt family. Then there’s Marble House, a 19th-century beauty that lives up to its name with its lavish use of marble. Walking alongside these architectural marvels gave us a glimpse into the extravagant lifestyles of America’s elite in the early 20th century.
Another adventure took us by ferry to Martha’s Vineyard, where we rented bikes for a day of cycling. It was a perfect way to explore the island at our own pace, taking in the charming towns, scenic coastlines, and peaceful countryside. We wrapped up our day with a relaxing lunch, soaking in the island’s laid-back vibe before heading back to the mainland.
Our final two nights were spent in the luxurious Mandarin Oriental in Boston, a 5-star retreat in the heart of Back Bay. This hotel is part of QUAY's hotel programme and it did not disappoint. The location was perfect and the service was impeccable—a fitting end to our trip. While in Boston, we also walked the historic Pilgrim Trail, tracing the steps of early American settlers through the city’s cobblestone streets.
The journey home, however, wasn’t without its hiccups. We got caught in the chaos of the CrowdStrike IT outage, but that’s a story for another day. Let’s just say, I was incredibly grateful for the support of my colleagues back at QUAY, who helped navigate the disruption and get us home.
Overall, it was an unforgettable journey through one of the most scenic and historic parts of the USA. From coastal towns to mountain trails, and from covered bridges to cliffside mansions, New England truly has it all.

It is strongly recommended that all customers be adequately covered by insurance for the duration of their travel arrangements. Quay Travel cannot in any way be made liable for any additional cost incurred by the customer on any tour due to the customer not having adequate travel insurance.
A valid passport is required to travel internationally. As a general rule, passports should have at least 6 months of validity, we STRONGLY recommend this. Most countries will not permit a traveller to enter their country unless the passport is set to expire at least 6 months after the final day of travel. Your passport must be in good condition, and have sufficient blank pages; we recommend one per country for all countries visited. It is the traveller's responsibility to ensure that he/she has obtained all relevant exit and entry visas and other necessary travel documents for the journey including the correct passport validity. We are happy to assist you in determining visa requirements wherever possible

There are places you visit, and then there are experiences you live that dance through your memories forever. Como Castello Del Nero in Tuscany is the latter. Our very own Michelle from the office recently had the pleasure of immersing herself in this Italian paradise, and the tales she brought back are nothing short of a fairy tale.
Imagine waking up to a vista that’s quintessentially Tuscany—rolling hills draped in the golden light of dawn, vineyards stretching into the horizon, and the air, a symphony of serene tranquility. The rooms? Each holds its own character, a unique whisper of history blended with modern luxury that speaks to every traveler’s soul.
Epicurean adventures await at the Michelin-starred restaurant where gastronomy is both art and journey. But why stop there? Savor the essence of Tuscany with an intimate wine tasting guided by a sommelier who unravels the secrets of local vintages with every sip.
Adventure beckons with truffle hunting in the lush forests of the estate—an authentic Italian pastime.
And for those seeking to unwind, the spa is a sanctuary of wellness, coupled beautifully with a serene outdoor swimming pool.
Want to experience an Italian village dinner? The olive grove dinner. Once a week, guests gather under the stars amidst ancient trees, sharing stories and dishes that taste of the region’s heart.
For the spirited, a hot air balloon ride at dawn offers a breath-taking perspective of Tuscany’s undulating charm. Prefer your feet on the ground? The estate’s hiking trails and bike tours to nearby villages offer a beautiful way to connect with the countryside.
And to align your spirit with the peace of the surroundings, engage in the harmony of yoga, available twice a day.
Como Castello Del Nero is not just a stay—it’s a passage into Tuscany’s soul. Ready for an Italian escape that touches more than just the senses?
